WoofChef uses public nutrient data from sources like the USDA and checks recipes against the NRC's published nutrient requirements.

What is the NRC nutrition standard?

The National Research Council is part of the National Academies, an independent scientific organization that publishes evidence-based reports. Its 2006 book, Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, is one of the core references behind modern dog-food standards, including the AAFCO nutrient profiles used for commercial pet food. WoofChef works directly with NRC values because they are a better fit for home-fed whole-food recipes: we can compare the ingredients in your bowl against nutrient needs by calories or body weight, instead of treating the recipe like a commercial feed label.
